Everything you need to know about Ball Hockey Sticks

Have a question about Ball Hockey Sticks? You're most likely to find the answer here!

The ideal length for a ball hockey stick generally falls between the player's nose and chin. This length allows for optimal control and balance when handling the ball. However, the preferred stick length can vary depending on a player's style of play, with offensive players often choosing shorter sticks for better control and defensive players opting for longer sticks for greater reach.

The choice of blade curvature for ball hockey sticks generally comes down to personal preference and play style. A more curved blade can offer better control and help with lifting the ball, which can be beneficial for forwards and offensive players. On the other hand, a less curved blade can provide better accuracy and a more consistent flat pass, typically preferred by defensemen.

The weight of a ball hockey stick can significantly influence a player's performance. A lighter stick allows for quicker handling and faster shots, which can be advantageous for offensive players who need to make quick decisions and movements. For example, our AK Kevlar stick only weighs 390g! On the other hand, a heavier stick may provide more power and stability, often preferred by defensive players.

High-performance ball hockey sticks are typically made from materials such as carbon fiber or other composites. For example, our AK Kevlar (390g) stick is made from 100% carbon fiber. These materials are chosen for their strength, durability, and lightweight characteristics. They are designed to offer superior performance, including faster shot speed, better ball control, and increased stick durability.

Wood and composite ball hockey sticks each have their advantages. Wooden sticks are traditionally used, known for their affordability, and feel for the ball. On the other hand, composite sticks like the AK7, are often made from materials like carbon fiber, are lighter and typically offer more flex options. These sticks are designed for performance, offering quicker shot release and better ball handling, but they can be more expensive than their wooden counterparts.

Choosing the right flex for your ball hockey stick is crucial for optimal performance. Flex refers to how much the stick bends when force is applied. A lower number indicates a stiffer stick, while a higher number indicates more flexibility. The right flex depends on your playing style, position, and your own weight. Knapper offers three wide variations of flex : junior, intermediate and adult. In the end, it's important to consider your own playstyle and position when choosing a specific flex.

The difference between a mid-kick and a low-kick ball hockey stick lies in the location of the stick's flex point, which affects shot speed and power. Mid-kick sticks have a flex point nearer the middle of the shaft, delivering more power and are great for powerful slap shots and one-timers. Conversely, low-kick sticks have a flex point closer to the blade, which allows for a quicker release, ideal for quick wrist and snap shots.

Taping a ball hockey stick enhances grip and control, but it's important to note that no tape is needed underneath the bottom side of the blade. Starting from the heel of the blade, wrap the tape towards the toe, covering the top. The most important is to cover the flat side of the blade. On our Knapper ball hockey sticks, like the AK5, we've incorporated a tape-similar grip on our blade to enhance performance without having to tape the blade itself.

The length of a ball hockey stick can significantly affect stick handling. A longer stick may give a player more reach and better leverage for shooting, but it can be more challenging to handle the ball and execute quick maneuvers.
